Classical Ballet and Lyrical Classes

Classical ballet is a traditional and formal style of ballet that adheres to classical ballet technique. It is known for its aesthetics and rigorous technique such as turnout of the legs, high extensions, and working toward to goal of pointe work. Ballet exemplifies flowing, precise movements and exudes ethereal qualities.

Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. Lyrical dancing is performed to music with lyrics in order to inspire movements and express strong emotions felt from the lyrics. Because lyrical dancing focuses on the expression of strong emotion, the style concentrates more on individual approach and expressiveness rather than the precision of movements.

Pointe Classes

Pointe technique is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all their body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. To enroll in this class, you must have at least 3 consecutive years of ballet training at Miss Sam’s Dance Centre as well as approval from Miss Sam herself. Pointe training is a very serious subject and doing it too early can be harmful to growth and development.

You will be expected to visit Bailey’s Slipper Shop in Rochester to be properly fitted for your pointe shoes before fall classes being. Do not buy your shoes online or locally without being professionally fitted at Bailey’s! This can result in serious injury and failure to work correctly while wearing the shoe.

Jazz/Hip Hop Classes

This tackles a dance form that matches the rhythms and techniques of Jazz/Hip Hop music. Jazz/Hip Hop dance is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. This specific style combines today’s dance trends with breakdancing, hip hop, and jazz technique.

Tap Classes

Irish Dance Classes

Irish Step Dance is a style of performance dance with roots derived from traditional Irish culture. It is characterized by a stiff upper body and quick, precise movements of the feet. Both soft and hard shoe Irish styles are taught and set to lively Irish music. This class helps develop rhythm, body control, and a sense of cultural style.

This style of dance is characterized by movements that assist the storyline of a song and a character. Dancing and singing will provide the student with the fundamentals of performing on stage necessary for stage presence.
